Review: Mad Men – "The Grown-Ups"

I had prepared this long question about this season’s motif of dreams and what that said about the characters’ ... It’s certainly living in the distance, and definitely I’m doing that on purpose....

Baking Soda: So Many Uses; So Little Money… and Plastic

I have never found a commercial deodorant that could go that kind of distance, natural or otherwise. ... She’s no longer writing the blog, but this post remains and I refer others to it often....

How Your Body Tells a Story As Well as Words Do

Why is it that when you look at certain people, you think they’re pleasant or kind, or maybe even mean? Before they say a word, you make judgements about whether you want to saunter over and listen to their words. It’s their body language–the set of their mouth, their facial expressions, their gestures. Often, these are movements they aren’t aware of, but telegraph so much information to you, you make decisions about your interest in approaching them. This is true with the characters in the

Road trip tip: Eating on the road

Before I had kids I really didn’t think that much about what I’d eat when I had a long drive. Either we’d grab a slice of pizza at a rest stop or just wait until we got to our final destination. Excuse me for a minute. OK, I’ve wiped my eyes at the thought of skipping a meal. Last time it happened to me was in July of 2001 the day before I found out I was pregnant. Needless to say, this approach simply doesn’t work when traveling with children of any age. Kids need to eat, and if your kids

Powerful Dialogue Sells the Show: Bakemonogatari 03 (Mayoi Snail 1) and Macross Frontier 03 (On Your Marks)

There are two kinds of dialogue that I consider excellent, and while some shows may only have one of each, both add considerable value to the experience of watching them. These are: Expositional, qualified by economy (no text dumps explaining how the world works); and Color, often characterized by (but not limited to) capriciousness and cleverness (adding oodles of character to the characters participating in the conversation), also it is about something . For the purposes of this discu

It Happened One Night…

It Happened One Night…     About 25 years ago I was teaching Marine Invertebrate Zoology at the Bamfield Marine Station (the name has been since changed to the Bamfield Marine Science Centre ), a university-run marine teaching and research laboratory facility on the Canadian west coast.  This facility is located on the shores of Bamfield Inlet, a small embayment on the south side of Barkley Sound near the southwest corner of Vancouver Island.  The course ran from late April until ear

Little Orphan Anna (Plus Max and Nick)

HACK’S NOTE: No, this wasn’t a threesome story. It was a gimmick about which I was very excited—I introduce all the characters in Chapter One, at the end of which the reader chooses which guy she prefers in the role of hero and continues with his story. Unfortunately, the gimmick is the best thing about it. I never connected with the heroine, which is particularly problematic due to the story being told in 1st-person point of view (hers), and although the guys’ stories are different after Chapt

Three by Jhumpa Lahiri

Winner of a Pulitzer Prize, this is as fine a collection of short stories as I've read in a long while. ... The distance between all of the characters, coupled with the poised, deliberate writing, may make this book difficult to stay with for its duration....
