Purchased this hoping for some interesting and creative ways to stay in touch with my grandkids across the country. Had no idea it was going to be very religious in outlook. Very disappointed in this book.

This book is from a genuine heart! Janet Teitsort is an inspiration to grandparents who want to stay in touch with their grandchildren in a world that keeps families busy and pulled apart. Her ideas are tested and they work!

I bought this book knowing full well that it was very religious. (Thank you to the previous reviewers!) I was prepared to ignore that part in exchange for what I hoped would be some great ideas for connecting with my far, far away grandchildren.

I have to tell you that this book covers most ages of grandchildren (up to and including grandkids away at college or in the military! That's unusual in my search. ) The ideas are creative and many of them sound like lots of fun -- if you live within the same country and speak the same language as your grandkids and have a lot of money to send a package every few weeks.

Sadly, none of this was all that much help for me.

My children wouldn't recognize most of the holidays Mrs. Teisort explores in her book because they are not being raised in the United States or as Americans. They wouldn't be able to get many of the products she recommends and it's outrageously expensive to send gifts to them--I spend $20 on gifts and another $40 on shipping on birthdays as it is! And calling them or taping books for them to listen to isn't all that helpful since I don't speak the language they do.

But I do highly recommend this book to American parents of American grandchildren who have some amount of money to send a package once a month or so! (And either they and their grandchildren are both Christian or who won't find it off putting to have to cherry pick the good ideas out of the religious dross).

This book didn't tell me anything I hadn't already thought of. My grandchildren have just moved away and I'm looking for ways to stay connected to them. Most of these ideas have been presented before. One thing I did like was that she went through the year month by month and gave ideas for the season or holiday going on.

You'll find recipes, crafts and fun ideas for the holidays that you can use to stay close to long distance grandkids. I found the ways to make blended families feel loved especially helpful in this day and age of so many remarriages.

Michelle Ray's AT guide book is the most current, concise, and entertaining resource for anyone even considering hiking the Appalachian Trail. She has put a tremendous amount of research into this book. What's more, she manages to convey a sense of adventure and excitement with all the information and advice. She brings not only her own experience as a thru-hiker, but, as a librarian has managed to compile a wealth of information in a very readable fashion. There are lots of books about the AT, but this one should be the prospective hiker's main standby. It is light enough to carry in your backpack.
I naively bought a magicjack from amazon after seeing them on an infomercial and at Frys. It was a pain to setup (not just plugin and use as the infomercial promised) and once I got it running the voice/sound quality was extremely flaky/unpredictable. I'm a skype user and will go back to skype for my PC calling. I may try out an ooma box to see is they're better (the reviews on Amazon are at least better than the magiccrap). You get what you pay for -- this thing is going on the shelf at my house.

I think everyone who is currently under long distance relationship and who plans to start LDR should get one. The book was full of valuable insights and practical, concrete, and creative advice in guiding you through your LDR. I liked the way the author compared LDR to a long flight experience. It was a refreshing and vivid metaphor. I agreed with the author when she mentioned 5 key elements in succeeding LDR. The author was absolutely right. Personality characteristics, background, goals, values, and interests played so important roles in maintaining steady and healthy LDR.

As with the other review's this is a 2007 model sold as new and does not work.
Took almost 2 weeks to arrive from Isael. Don't waste your time or money. You can buy a blackjack at Best Buy without the headaches.

This guide to how to prepare for a Thru Hike is one of the best I have seen, except for one chapter, Chapter 5, Getting Your Gear On, The Pack.

Little is more important than sellecting a good pack. The author does not fairly state the advantages and disavantages between internal and external packs. To say that the external frame pack was used mainly between the 50's and the 70's on the AT is totally misleading and incorrect. External frame packs have been the backbone of hiking the AT. They still should be considered, when choosing a good durable, sturdy, highly useable, yet comfortable pack for a thruhike.

For good reading, to help you select the best pack for your Tru Hike, I would recomend, Long Distant Hiking, Lessons from the AT by Roland Mueser, Backpacker & Hiker's Handbook by William Kemsley Jr. or The Appalachian Trail Hiker by Victoria and Frank Logue,

After becoming well informed, go to a GOOD pack shop and try on the various packs you read about. Don't be pressured into buying the pack that the salesperson is currently pushing. Know for your self what to look for in a good pack and why. Your salesperson may be into the current fad of Ultra Lite Backpacking, but is a super lite, one large pocket frameless pack, your best choice for a tru hike?.

The rest of the book is very well written and I recomend it highly.

Just bought the Long Distance Relationship Guidebook for a friend who recently came out of an intense long distance relationship, and we read it together. This book is compassionate, down to earth and very insightful. I think the best point about this book is that the author included tons of really creative ideas for strengthening a relationship, *not* just a long distance one! My friend and I both found many ideas we'd like to try in real life for making our love relationships stronger. I highly recommend this book!

My girlfriend sent this book to me earlier this year. We've been in a relationship for 3 years, but have spent more than half of that time apart because she's French and lives in Paris. This book is a fast read and has lots of good ideas for a romantic guy like me. Overall, I think most of the activities might be best suited for people in their teens or twenties, and I might not use all the romantic activities in the book, but it's a great launching pad for thinking up more good ideas. I like the straightforward way the author writes. I can tell she learned a lot from her experiences and those she interviewed, both good and bad. Finally, I'd like to see her write a new edition of this book since a couple of the many technologically oriented activities are now slightly outdated. However, like I said, if you're creative at all, you can adapt her many cool ideas to suit your needs.

My husband and I began our relationship as an LDR and we spent four years apart. Although we did get through it, we only avoided some of the pitfalls while falling headlong into others. At the time it never occurred to either of us to look elsewhere for guidance on how to approach the relationship. Looking back, I think we could have had a much less lonely and also more enjoyable time if we had the benefit of the advice contained in The Long Distance Relationship Guidebook. Even though I have read it with hindsight now, I still find it useful.
It is a practical book with lots of fun and interesting ideas. There is no need to try all of the suggestions for staying close and keeping the communication channels open, just pick the ones that appeal. If I had had this book at the time,I would have copied the 11 advantages and pinned them up so I could remind myself how to enjoy the relationship. I also especially liked the suggested activities for feeling closer.
If I ever have to go LDR again with my husband, I will be keeping this book as a handy resource.

Most people will say it's impossible to have a working long distance relationship. But that because they don't dedicate them self to it and also miss such things like sex. However I have been in one for bit over 2 years now.
First get a web cam and headset. Install a program called skype. You can chat to each other for free and even see each other on cam.
Also make sure you are online a lot. For if you are never it can be a bit concerning for the other person.
Communication! Don't hide details and be secretive. Also make sure he knows you love him.
If you are creative then do something for the person based on it. Like write a song or draw a picture.
And just because you both live apart, doesn't mean you can't do activities together. me and my boyfriend both play online games together and sometimes just single player games but it gives something more in common and to talk about.

Finally holidays make sure one of you fly to the other to spend as much time together.

I hope it works out for the both of you :)

Long distance relationships aren't as hard to maintain as everyone makes them out to be. It's the people in them that make them complicated. I am currently in a relationship with a Marine.

Here are a few words of advice for you: don't let others influence or bring you down in your relationship. Stay strong and faithful. Time is a concept that you make important and distance is only as great as you make it. Don't over complicate the simple things. Find others in a simple situation to gain support from.

Here is a website that has ideas, many others in a similar situation, and a lot of great ways to cope with the distance.

www.lovingfromadistance.com

I wish you luck, keep your head up.

Hey gurl, well if u truly do love that guy and trust him (Let's face it! He's a guy and is going so far away) then i suggest you talk to him.
Ask him if he realy loves you and wants this to go on.
If the answer is yes, then you can always keep in touch..msn, skype...
Video calls improve LDR a lot!!!
But if not, just let go...it was never meant to be.

Ive been in one myself since a year and we still are crazily in love!!!

Tony Richardson is today a relatively neglected director but back in the 1960's was responsible for as many good and important British movies as anyone else in UK cinema-as per Tom Jones ,A Taste of Honey ,The Entertainer ,The Charge of the Light Brigade . This is for me his key work and is a superior example of the "angry young man"movement in movies .

Tom Courtenay plays Colin Smith, a poorly educated youth sent to Borstal - a sort of British youth reformatory -for robbing a baker's shop. The Governor of the institution (played by Michael Redgrave )believes in the rehabilitative powers of sport ,believing it builds character and is quick to notice Smith, with a whippet like physique and reserves of stamina , possesses considerable ability as a cross country runner . He encourages this and in particular his participation in the annual cross country competition with a prestigious private school for the sons of the priviliged in the area. He promises Smith special privileges if he competes in and wins the race . Smith agrees and the movie than traces his training regime and folows him on his runs across the land around the Borstal -there is some striking monochrome photography of the countryside here . During these runs Smith reflects on his life and we are given flashback sequences tracing the influences on Smith that have lead him to this point in his life .

On the day of the race he easily outclasses the competitors from the rival team -including a pre-stardom James Fox-and produces a startling act of defiance against "the system" -his revenge if you like against the forces he beleieves have brought him to this point .

Tom Courtenay announced himself as a major actor with this movie and if Redgrave is less impactful it is only because the audience expects great things from this consumate actor ;they are two fine actors giving outstanding performances,
The stark photography of Walter Lasally adds much to the movie as does the adaptation of his own short story by Alan Sillitoe

I do not share Mr Sillitoe's belief that criminals are victims of any "system" but even so I do applaud this powerful and still pertinent movie

If you truly love someone than it should be more advantageous to keep it alive..if this is the case than I suggest you:
a. both get webcams asap (unless he has an autobot for a car and will end up missing your "chat dates" like Shia LeBeof in Transformers haha)
b. If you don't have long distance calling or a cell phone plan with free night and weekend minutes than buy calling cards, talking on the phone is MUCH better than texting although I know texting is easier nowadays (I text like 2000 times a month at least I know believe me haha)
c. start saving up NOW and plan on visiting him, or maybe helping him visit you for the next holiday
d. make him something to remember you by, a handmade scarf or a decorated picture frame with a pic of you guys together or just a picture of you lookin all cute :)
e. never EVER underestimate the value of old fashined hand written letters, you can stain it with tea and burn the edges and use a really nice pen to make it look old fashined (spray it with your favorite perfume or something too maybe hehe)
f. make a silly little pact, like you have to make each other laugh at least once every week or something

Communicate with him as often as possible. Use Instant Messenger, Web-cams, Text messages, and a phone. This way you can still talk to each other. Long distance relationships are tough but these help to ease everything. The web-cam idea helps to make it feel as if they are right there in front of you. It really helps. Long distance relationships can survive, even if people say they won't. Just talk to him as if he was standing in front of you. I am currently in a long distance relationship, I live in CT and my girlfriend lives near Boston, MA, and we are doing pretty well. If you believe it will work, and want it to work, it will. Good Luck.

Long distance relationships can survive, even if people say they won’t. Just talk to him as if he was standing in front of you. I am currently in a long distance relationship, I live in CT and my girlfriend lives near Boston, MA, and we are doing pretty well. If you believe it will work, and want it to work, it will. Good Luck.

One of the best of Britain's Angry Young Man films, Richardson's expressive drama hinges on the complex psychology of Colin, an uneducated but cunning youth still smarting from the recent death of his father. Richardson builds tension by cutting between the restrictions and tensions of reform-school life and Colin's recollection of events leading up to his arrest and detention. Courtenay ("of "Billy Liar" fame) gives a haunting performance in the title role, and Redgrave is masterful playing a cold rehabilitator obsessed with winning a trophy. For a powerful expression of working-class disaffection, go the distance with "Runner. "

This here half forgotten 1962 masterpiece, shot in gorgeous B&W, is a trad gem worth discovering again. "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" was one of the key "angry young man films" of its era, but its raw power & stark beauty still resonate today.

The wonderful Tom Courtenay plays the title character, Colin Smith, a working class kid whose life is up the junction & then some. Following a string of petty crimes, Colin is thrown in the clink - British reform school - only to have the penitentiary wankers coddle him, as they are banking on Colin's athletic prowess to win a cross country race against a prestigious school. However, our noble laddie has different plans altogether:

"I'm going to let them think they have me house trained, but they never will, the [. . . ]. To get me beat they'll have to stick a rope around my neck. "

A timeless work of art & an ending that is indeed one of cinema's greatest moments, I cannot recommend it enough. So go seek this film out, hitch hike a ride if you have to, punch a guy in a Prada suit, I don't care. . . just get yer mitts on it, buddy.

Talk as much as you can. Webcam is always a good strategy. But if you fail at communication you fail in trying to make the relationship work. One person in the relationship usually cares but the other eventually doesn't give a shit. Good Luck..

you do not need to subscribe to a long distance company to receive long distance calls.

all inbound calls, no matter the source, arrive as "local calls".

the only time you need to subscribe to a long distance company is to PLACE long distance calls. This excludes toll free as they are handled differently.

one thing about not subscribibg to a long distance company is that you do not pay the FCC mandated service fees and no minimum billing schemes.

I make all LD (IXC) calls via my cell phone.
